New York City Typography – Little Italy and the San Gennaro Festival

by Syd

The Feast of San Gennaro is an 11 day street fair congregated along Mulberry Street in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan.  The festival celebrates San Gennaro, the Patron Saint of Naples, as well as Italian culture and the Italian-American community.

Italic script seemed to be an obvious choice for many signs in Little Italy, since Italic calligraphy originated in Italy

Some signs contained sans-serif typefaces, which provide a more modernized feel

This sign utilizes a geometric sans-serif typeface

Like many signs at the festival, the entry sign was lit red in an Italic script
